In the 4th quarter of 2013, San Carlos Solar Energy Inc. (SACASOL) contracted Conergy to design and equip a solar plant, with a total megawatt capacity of 22MW and a power production of 35,000 MWh per year in Negros Occidental.

SaCaSol, a joint venture between the local clean energy developer, Bronzeoak Philippines and European-based asset management and project finance group, ThomasLloyd, received Asian Power Magazine’s Award for Independent Power Producer of 2014, in recognition of their ground – breaking achievement for building the country’s first utility-scale commercial solar power plant.

The Philippines presents a very attractive market opportunity for utility scale solar projects. SACASOL is a milestone project for the country and will be the first to receive the Feed In Tariff, as established in the 2008 Renewable Energy Act. Our project has begun site construction, and is scheduled for full commercial operation in the second quarter of 2014,” said T.U. Michael Sieg, Chairman & CEO of ThomasLloyd.

“We were attracted to Conergy as a partner because it has built a successful track record in realizing solar power projects here in Asia,” added Jose Maria P. Zabaleta, President of Bronzeoak Philippines.

“Since it entered the Asia Pacific market in 2006, Conergy has successfully commissioned over 100 MW of large-scale projects in Asia. The Philippines, being a tropical country, where the sun shines almost all year round, has, like these countries, similarly vast potential for solar energy,” said Alexander Lenz, President of Conergy Asia & ME. “We have long wanted to participate in the development of the Philippines’ solar power resource. Hence, we are very pleased and honored to have been given the opportunity by SACASOL to build our first large-scale project here. With this facility, we hope that solar energy can be an important contributor to the country’s overall energy mix, as utility-scale solar power generation is available today,” Lenz emphasized. Conergy is working on the SACASOL project in collaboration with its partner, ECHEMA Konsult Inc.

Conergy, one of the world’s largest downstream solar companies announced in November 2014 that it was awarded contracts to build two new solar plants in the Philippines, where it is already the market leader for solar Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC).

The Philippines is rapidly increasing energy generation in order to reduce electricity prices, which are the fifth highest in the world and to improve the country’s competitiveness ahead of the launch of the ten-country Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) single market, which will be the sixth biggest in the world. Electricity market data indicate that average spot electricity prices decline as solar power generation increases, due to reduced consumption of expensive diesel. The Philippine government is therefore supporting solar through a feed-in-tariff of 0.21 USD / 0.17 Euros per kWh of grid-connected PV.

Bronzeoak Philippines President Jose Maria P. Zabaleta Jr. shares, “Sacasol is moving ahead with its expansion and is excited to be doing so with Conergy, with whom it has worked well in the past. With the right partners, the projects can be delivered on the to meet the country’s growing energy needs.”
